Ibrahim Ifrah Areef, fondly known as Ifrah, a former goalkeeper for the Maldives national football team, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 36.
He had been receiving treatment at ADK Hospital after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke earlier in the week.
Ifrah was admitted to the hospital on Monday following the stroke, which caused a serious decline in his condition. According to his family, he underwent emergency surgery that evening to address bleeding in the brain. However, due to complications in clearing the blood completely, he was placed in a medically induced coma in an effort to reduce swelling.
Ifrah was widely regarded as one of the most gifted goalkeepers in the country’s football history. His career included stints with top Maldivian clubs such as Valencia, Maziya, New Radiant, Victory, TC Sports Club, and BG Sports Club. Beyond his club contributions, his role in the Maldives national team was both celebrated and impactful.
A defining highlight of his career was being part of the historic squad that secured the Maldives’ first-ever SAFF Championship title in 2008, an achievement still cherished by football fans across the nation.
News of Ifrah’s passing has deeply saddened the Maldivian sports community. Many have come forward to express heartfelt condolences to his family and pay tribute to his dedication, talent, and lasting impact on Maldivian football.
