Back in June, former VP Adeeb's family had revealed that he had developed an internal cyst, kidney stones and vision impairment from glaucoma, since his incarceration in 2015. They noted that doctors have said that the cyst could turn cancerous if not treated, adding that Adeeb's cyst is in the same spot as his sibling, who had died due to cancer complications.
According to the family, the treatments that Adeeb requires is not available in the Maldives.
However, the state has refused to grant him medical leave, saying that he was "a flight risk".
Adeeb was sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison, on multiple charges of graft and terrorism.
