While the Criminal Court's chief judge Adam Arif read out the verdict on RaajjeTV's chief operating officer Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, his mother was outside the Court, standing in solidarity with the journalists.
The Criminal Court judge's mother, Areefa has never been seen at any such gatherings. However, as she stood outside the Court on Sunday, she expressed disapproval over the judiciary, as well as the actions being taken against politicians.
She especially condemned the sentencing of Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim. The business tycoon was sentenced to three years, two months and 12 months in prison a hearing held last Thursday, as he was admitted to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, after collapsing in court earlier that day.
Judge Arif had presided over the case as well.
As Areefa stopped to pose for photos with those gathered near the Court, some individuals had been criticizing her son.
At today's hearing, the Criminal Court had acquitted Fiyaz of the charges of touching an officer. Charges were raised against him following an arrest in November 2015, while covering a bomb scare in the capital Malé City.
