MediaNet, Maldives’ largest cable TV provider, has decided to pursue a case against the Maldives Broadcasting Commission, for imposing a fine against over Al Jazeera’s controversial exposé into a money-laundering plot implicating the government.
MediaNet was fined on 13th June, for having rebroadcasted Stealing Paradise. While the case at dispute resolution, the Civil Court scheduled a hearing for Monday.
Producers of Al Jazeera’s Stealing Paradise, which uncovered a money laundering scheme of USD 1.5 billion primarily through evidence garnered on then Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s mobile phone, has since claimed that the government hired firms to suppress it.
The team’s investigative unit said while receiving the One World Media’s Corruption Reporting Award in June, adding that the government had hired British legal and public relations firms to suppress the agency’s broadcast.
