Parliamentary group leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Nihan has said that President Abdulla Yameen will take majority in Kamadhoo island of Baa atoll, in the 2018 presidential elections.
He made the comment via twitter on Saturday night, after the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won the Kamadhoo island council seat by-election.
"God willing, President Yameen will take majority in B. Kamadhoo in the 2018 presidential elections," he said, in a tweet posted in Dhivehi.
MDP's Ahmed Saajid won the seat with a total of 149 votes in his favor, while PPM's Ali Naaiz got 142 votes.
The Kamadhoo island council seat became vacant after one of elected council members resigned days after taking oath of office.
The ruling party also failed to take majority in the Local Council Elections, which was held in May after months of delay as PPM was "unable to prepare due to internal conflict".
