Governor Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Dr. Azeema Adam has resigned.
The Governor resigned after weeks of speculation that she is to offer her resignation.
She made the announcement in a press conference at the Authority. Dr. Azeema revealed that she intended to leave the Maldives, with her husband Dr. Ali Naseer who had been appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, as the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States of America and as the Non- Resident Ambassador of the Maldives to Canada.
Dr. Azeema was appointed as Governor following resignation of Fazeel Najeeb on December 31,2013. She had preivously served as Assistant Governor and Chief Economist, Monetary Policy, Research and Statistics. Dr. Azeema started her career in MMA in May 1991.
She had a PhD in Economics from Australia's University of Canberra.
The opposition had accused Dr. Azeema of perpetrating and assisting various acts of corruption in the country. She has denied all claims.
