A youth has been arrested in a case involving a kilogram of drugs.
The individual arrested in connection with the drug case is a 24-year-old man from Fuvahmulah City.
He is implicated in a case of using, possessing, and trafficking drugs.
Upon being presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing in connection with the case, the man was given 15 days in remand. He is to be held in a custodial prison.
According to the court, sufficient evidence has been presented to suggest that he committed the alleged crime.
When he was arrested, drugs exceeding the trafficking threshold and drug packaging equipment were found in the apartment where he was residing in.
In addition to this, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) believes the suspect is involved in selling and trafficking drugs as part of a wide network.
The reasons stated for keeping him in detention are based on Article 49 of the Constitution and Articles 59 and 60 of the Criminal Procedure Act, considering that he may pose a threat to public safety. The detention order issued by the Criminal Court also states that the conditions in Article 13 (c) (1), (3), and (6) of the Criminal Procedure Regulation are met.
In connection with this case, the defense stated that a large number of drugs and drug packaging materials were found in the kitchen and room of the apartment where he was staying.
Further, the apartment was not his residence and he is to have been arrested within 20 to 30 minutes of arriving at the apartment.
MPS has revealed that more drugs were found in other apartments and two cars that were searched in connection with this case.
However, the suspect has denied any connection to these items.
A total of one kilogram of narcotics was confiscated in connection with the case.
The arrested suspect has a criminal record according to arrest and detention logs.
Further, the police institution has stated that this is a case involving the participation of other individuals.
