President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he has instructed all relevant government agencies and institutions to make the required amendments to the laws and regulations in place, and begin implementing stringent measures against those who drive vehicles at high speeds anywhere across the country.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’ on Friday, the president revealed that he has instructed the relevant government agencies to make necessary amendments to laws and regulations and begin implementing strict measures against those who speed, anywhere, any time.
The president’s remarks come at a time a fatal accident in Hulhumalé late Thursday killed a youth.
The president stressed that due to reckless driving, a very tragic accident unfolded late Thursday and that once again, a life has been lost.
Muizzu said this in reference to the 23-year-old Maldivian man, identified as Hassan Samaah from Isdhoo island of Laamu atoll who died in the fatal collision.
Samaah was employed at the Maldives Correctional Service.
Stressing that preventing such tragic incidents requires the cooperation of all parties involved, the president assured the people that his administration would take all necessary measures to stop dangerous speeding and make the streets of capital Malé City as well as outlying islands of the Maldives, safe for everyone.
The president offered a prayer for the victim of the accident to be granted eternal peace, and for the bereaved family to be bestowed with patience and strength to get through this difficult time.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the dangerous accident that killed a youth, occurred in the early hours of Friday.
MPS received reports of the accident at around 02:48am on Friday.
The accident occurred after a speeding car collided with a motorcycle near Central Park.
Samaah succumbed to severe head injuries while receiving treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital.
A 26-year-old Maldivian man who was driving the car, was arrested in connection with the case.
Arrested was Mohamed Visam Sidhugee, native to Hithadhoo district of southernmost Addu City.
Further investigations are currently underway in connection with the accident.
