A special task force has been established to monitor and address the situation surfacing from the spell of bad weather Maldives is presently experiencing.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu established the task force on Tuesday and the inaugural meeting was held to discuss important and swift measures.

Over the past couple of days, different parts of the island nation have been experiencing torrential rain showers and thunderstorms, which have caused immense flooding in some parts, damaging property and impacting the livelihoods of the public.

Tuesday’s meeting revolved around discussions focusing on the current situation, as well as identifying the issues that may be addressed swiftly in response to the heavy rain showers.

Further, the task force discussed measures to prevent flooding in the event of continuous rain showers.

Discussions also touched upon strategies to ensure the public is effectively equipped and prepared to receive assistance when required.

Muizzu chaired the task force meeting.

The task force comprises of Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, Chief of Staff at the President's Office Abdulla Fayaz, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy and Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that more than 20 islands across the Maldives experienced damages due to the torrential showers, with over 200 homes affected in the capital due to flood water.

Some families have also been relocated, as recovery efforts continue.
