Attorney General Mohamed Anil has disrupted the entire legal system, having eroded the democratic doctrine of separating powers, says long-standing opposition MP Mariya Ahmed Didi.
MP Mariya said, while speaking in a talk-show on Raajje Television, that Anil has destroyed ‘his own promising future’ by knowingly being complicit to acts that are blatantly unconstitutional. She said that opposition parties were forced to file a no-confidence motion against Anil, due to his part in aiding President Abdulla Yameen ‘abuse’ the rights of the people.
“Anil has purposefully pursued disrupting the separation of state powers by filing constitutional interpretation cases with the Supreme Court and has in many ways acts outside legal ambit in order to help attain personal benefits for President Yameen” MP Mariya said.
The allied opposition parties had filed a motion of no-confidence against Anil on 11th August, on the grounds that he has attempted to influence the conduct of parliament and the candidacy and mandate of parliamentarians. In doing so, he has violated the integrity of parliamentarians – as enshrined in Article 16 of the Political Parties Act.
Mariya further said that even prosecutors are particularly biased towards the current administration, and that the entire Maldivian legal system needs to be made independent from executive powers.
