President of the former ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has urged to take swift measures to protect the rights of the people of Palestine.
He made these remarks during a courtesy call paid on United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
The meeting was held at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’ following the meeting, Shahid expressed delight in having met the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and commended the “outstanding” work of the High Commissioner in protecting and promoting human rights globally during these uncertain and trying times
Discussions at the meeting revolved around the human rights situations across different parts of the globe, presently.
Shedding light on the significance of human rights and the growing violation of global rights, Shahid particularly stressed upon the gross violation of the rights of the Palestinian people.
In this regard, the former foreign minister requested the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to take immediate and swift measures to ensure the rights of the Palestinian people are protected.
Speaking at the meeting, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights praised Shahid for his immense contributions towards the protection and promotion of human rights, during his presidency at the United Nations General Assembly.
He went on to applaud the government of Maldives for its key role in Geneva, during the former administration when Shahid was foreign minister during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
