The number of tourist facilities that are currently operational across the Maldives has dropped to 1,193.

This was revealed by the latest weekly statistics publicized by the Ministry of Tourism on Thursday.

As such, the ministry’s figures revealed that as of May 29, the number of operational tourist accommodation facilities across the Maldives sat at 1,193.

The guesthouses span across 115 islands of 20 atolls, with hotels operational in nine islands of eight atolls. 69 percent of the bed capacity is occupied by resorts, followed by 23 percent occupied by guesthouses, five percent by safari vessels and three percent by hotels.

Presently, a total of 62,254 tourist beds are in operation across these facilities, which include 174 resorts, 855 guesthouses, 15 hotels and 149 live-aboard vessels.

The beds operational across these facilities include 42,953 in resorts, 2,016 in hotels, 14,369 in guesthouses and 2,916 in live-aboard vessels.

Maldives currently has a capacity of 1,201 tourist facilities which include 149 safari vessels, 855 guesthouses, 15 hotels and 182 resorts. This means that of the total facility capacity, eight resorts have yet to resume operations.

Tourist facilities currently in operation are:

  • Two resorts and 21 guesthouses in four islands of Haa Alif atoll,
  • One hotel, Two resorts and 17 guesthouses in five islands of Haa Dhaal atoll,
  • Two resorts and nine guesthouses in six islands of Shaviyani atoll,
  • Eight resorts and 13 guesthouses in five islands of Noonu atoll,
  • 17 resorts, one hotel and five guesthouses in seven islands of Raa atoll,
  • 16 resorts, one hotel and 69 guesthouses in 13 islands of Baa atoll,
  • 11 resorts and five guesthouses in four islands of Lhaviyani atoll,
  • 56 resorts, eight hotels and 312 guesthouses in 10 islands of Kaafu atoll,
  • 11 resorts and 150 guesthouses in eight islands of Alif Alif atoll,
  • 18 resorts, one hotel and 98 guesthouses in 10 islands of Alif Dhaal atoll,
  • Five resorts, one hotel and 54 guesthouses in five islands of Vaavu atoll,
  • Three resorts and five guesthouses in five islands of Meemu atoll,
  • One resort and eight guesthouses in two islands of Faafu atoll,
  • Nine resorts and nine guesthouses in six islands of Dhaalu atoll,
  • One resort and eight guesthouses in five islands of Thaa atoll,
  • Two resorts and four guesthouses in one island of Laamu atoll,
  • Five resorts, one hotel and 13 guesthouses in six islands of Gaaf Alif atoll,
  • Three resorts and 10 guesthouses in four islands of Gaaf Dhaal atoll,
  • 27 guesthouses in Fuvahmulah City,
  • Two resorts, one hotel and 18 guesthouses in six districts of Addu City in Seenu atoll

The ministry introduced Homestay in the Maldives in January 2022. Since then, a few more homestay facilities have been opened. This came under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s tourism development vision and policy to make tourism and its benefits accessible to the island communities as well.
