Family of Hussain Humam, the individual sentenced to capital punishment over the murder of Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, has claimed that President Abdullah Yameen had tried to link former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to the murder in order to deflect blame and suppress the narrative.
A member of the family speaking to RaajjeMV on the condition of anonymity claimed that President Yameen was trying to link the murder to Adeeb and Humam and suppress the narrative. As such, he said the biggest question everyone was asking about was who had funded the murder. He added that President Yameen was attempting to deflect it on Adeeb.
The family made the claim after President Yameen his speech given in STELCO to welcome new members to ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), claimed that Adeeb had removed Humam from prison, taken him to a resort and held a meeting. Rumors had also surfaced back in 2014 that Humam had met Adeeb as well.
‘The information I had received, proves somethings. A senior figure of the Government then had removed Humam from prison, taken him to a resort. Two guards at Maafushi jail attest to this meeting. Police had taken a statement. One gave a huge statement. I have to investigate why an inmate was removed illegally. When that is investigated, we’ll know who had the most interest in killing Afrasheem,’ he said.
Humam’s family said these claims were baseless and that Humam was only transferred to Feydhoofinolhu. He was taken there to meet the family of late Dr. Afrasheem and confess to the murder. He added that it was hardly likely that only two guards were aware that Humam was removed.
The family member said the identity of those who had funded was the mystery now. He also said the purpose of linking Adeeb to the murder was to suppress the narrative and to end the speculation. Noting that even Afrasheem’s family wished to find the real suspects, the family member said there were no other obstacles to implementing death penalty on Humam.
He added that Humam had been deprived from meeting or contacting family members for over three months now. He said they have been denied from meeting Humam.
President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali had refused to comment on the claims, stating that there was no comment over ‘mere speculation’.
