Maldives experiences heavy rain showers and adverse weather conditions during the southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon

Heavy rain showers are expected to prevail in islands of southern atolls on Saturday.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) revealed that islands in northern atolls are experiencing fine weather this weekend.

However, scattered rain showers have been prevailing across islands of central atoll on Friday and it is expected to continue through Saturday.

On Friday, some islands in southern atolls experienced rain showers.

Rain showers will continue to prevail across the Maldives in the south, on Saturday as well.

Between 8am Thursday to 8am Friday, heavy rainfall was experienced by residents of Hithadhoo district in southernmost Addu City. As such, 17.1 millimeters of rainfall recorded in Hithadhoo.

Further, Gemanafushi island of Gaaf Alif atoll experienced 8.9 millimeters of rainfall, with Hulhulé in Malé atoll experiencing 4.8 millimeters, Nilandhoo island of Faafu atoll experiencing 3.9 millimeters and Kahdhoo island in Laamu atoll experiencing two millimeters of rainfall.

Maldives experiences heavy rain showers and adverse weather conditions during the southwest monsoon as well as the northeast monsoon. Extensive periods of strong winds and adverse weather conditions are usually experienced mostly during the southwest monsoon.

Such adverse weather conditions have caused trees to uproot, roofs to be torn off, and heavy debris falling onto houses, causing immense damage. The squally weather during monsoon also causes extensive damage to crop in some islands and presents challenges for seafarers and fishermen as well. Some islands have been experiencing swell wave surges during high tides as well.
