The Criminal Court has scheduled its hearing over the allegations against Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, where he is to produce his defence, for Sunday.
The hearing is scheduled for 10:30 am, and judges have decided that the press and public are to be barred from entering.
The last hearing for the case against the opposition leader was held last Wednesday, where judges had decided to conduct proceedings behind closed doors on the grounds that judges and court officials involved in the case had received threats.
The Prosecutor General’s (PG) office raised the allegations against Qasim on April 12th. However, after prosecutors had forfeited a hearing held on July 10th, judges had decided to dismiss the case.
The PG’s office resubmitted the allegations two days later and Judge Adam Aarif had decided that the case will continue from the point at which it was previously dismissed.
Qasim’s lawyers told the press after the hearing last week that prosecutors have yet to respond to the points they raised in court. He is being accused of bribery under Article 510 of the penal code, which carries a prison sentence of three years and 12 days.
