Discussions have been held on opportunities for collaboration between the governments of Maldives and Australia, regarding challenges faced by climate vulnerable Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The discussions were held during a courtesy call Australia’s Ambassador for Climate Change, Kristin Tilley paid on Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer on Sunday.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

FM Zameer and the Australian Ambassador engaged in discussions regarding the pressing challenges faced by climate vulnerable SIDS like the Maldives.

They discussed opportunities to collaborate with like-minded countries such as Australia. 

FM Zameer briefed the Australian Ambassador on the environmental and climate change policies of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

This includes the shift to 33 percent renewable energy and the plan to plant five million trees across the Maldives.

FM Zameer shed light on the significance of jointly addressing the challenges faced by SIDS currently in accessing climate financing through international financial institutions. 

Discussions also revolved around efforts to enhance existing relations, with emphasis on boosting cooperation in areas such as tourism and people-to-people ties.

The meeting was joined by Bilateral Secretary Dr. Hala Hameed, Multilateral Secretary Ahmed Shiaan, Joint Secretary Shiuneen Rasheed and Desk Officer Saifulla Waleed.
