We are not working to create chaos in the country, rather to defend and uphold the constitution, says former president and opposition leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
The former President made the statement while speaking at an opposition gathering held at Maafannu Kunooz on Sunday night.
Calling on the opposition to continue with the reform work, Maumoon said that this work is not being carried out to create chaos in the country, rather "to defend and uphold the constitution, to ensure the rights of all and to establish peaceful society".
"I urge you to continue with your work. You work is not being carried out to create chaos in the country. There are statements being issued with this accusation. Your work is being done to defend and uphold the Constitution, to protect the rights of the people, to establish peace and stability in the country, to ensure equality and justice for all citizens. This is what you are doing. How is this creating chaos?" said Maumoon.
The former President also mocked incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, his half-brother, questioning him whether he did not know the responsibilities of being the country's president when he took his oath of office.
The half-brothers have been involved in a public dispute since June 2016, with the former President withdrawing support for the government in October.
He entered a coalition agreement with the main opposition leaders in March, agreeing to work jointly and together in matter agreed between the leader, both in parliament and in the political environment.
