Former Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Hugo Swire has stated that President Abdullah Yameen has forfeited right to continue as President of the nation.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, the former Minister made the statement and called on the restore democracy in the nation.

In another tweet, he had linked the Al-Jazeera produced expose on the Maldives, ‘Stealing Paradise’. In this tweet, he said that there were ‘disturbing allegations about political situation in Maldives’.

His tweet came following a travel advisory issued by the UK Government. The travel advisory was issued following the lockdown of Parliament on Monday. Following the lockdown several Members of Parliament were forcibly removed, detained and physically assaulted. International criticism and global coverage of the event had followed, with many media describing the lockdown as a military takeover of the Parliament.

Swire had visited Maldives in 2016.
