All MPs removed from Parliament premises

Madduvari Constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth and Thulusdhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim have been arrested.

The two MPs have been taken to the Police Headquarters of Shaheedh Hussain Adam.

Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan reported that the two were arrested as they had entered the Parliament illegally, as they were no longer Parliamentarians. The issue of Parliament seats is still under discussion and the Surpeme Court had not made a decision on the matter. Clause 74 of the Constitution states that the Supreme Court is the final authority on the issue of stripping sitting MPs from their Parliamentary seats.

Police had prevented opposition MPs from leaving the area near Maafannu Kunooz where they were gathered for a meeting. After they were released from the area, the MPs had attempted to enter the Parliament.  They were successful in the attempt, but were bodily removed from the premises a while after.

The Parliament was on lockdown since morning on Monday.
