Criminal Court has sentenced to hold MP for Dhiggaru Constituency Ahmed Faris Maumoon in detention until conclusion of the charges raised against him.
MP Faris was arrested on Tuesday on allegations that he had attempted to bribe his fellow Parliamentarians. His apartment in Maafannu Snow Rose was searched prior to his arrest.
The order issued by Judge Adam Arif said that MP Faris had attempted to influence and bribe Parliamentarians, to amass the 42 signatures required for the motion, after Parliament changed the ruling on no confidence motions.
The order added that MP Faris was accused of illegal activities, posed potential risk to an ongoing investigation and could hide evidence or influence witnesses.
Phones, pen drives, documents and other similar items were removed from the residence following the search on Tuesday.
Lawyer for MP Faris, Maumoon Hameed said that Faris’ arrest was a sign of injustice in the society, as no investigation had been carried out on the Parliamentarian who had confessed to disbursing money to Parliamentarians.
Former President and Faris’ father, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said the allegations on his son are false and baseless. He said that MP Faris had no need to or resources to bribe any individual.
