Maldives has secured another bronze medal at the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) 2023 Taekwondo Poomsae event.
The third bronze medal for Maldives was won by athlete Fathimath Ibrahim, in the under 40 years women’s category on Monday.
Maldives’ athlete Saifshan competed in the under 30 years event and Ahmed Fazeel competed in the under 40 years men’s Poomsae event as well.
This is the third medal Fathimath Ibrahim has secured at this year’s IOIG. As such, she also secured a silver medal in the under 52kg category and a bronze medal in the under 62kg category.
The promising athletes from Maldives competing in the Taekwondo event have so far secured five medals including two silver and three bronze. The other two medals were secured for the team by Jannath Jawad and Ahmed Fazeel.
Fazeel won silver in the below 87kg category, with Jannath Jawad winning bronze in the below 46kg category.
This was the first time the island nation competed in the Taekwondo event at a multi-sport international tournament and has made history by bringing home silver and bronze medals.
The Maldives Taekwondo team headed to Madagascar for this year’s IOIG with an aim to bring home gold. The team of five players is led by a Moroccan national, Coach Adnane Kanane, Head Coach of the Maldives Taekwondo Federation.
The coach and his team had been preparing for the IOIG for over a year.
