Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that dictatorships were doomed to fail.
He made the statement in a tweet posted following the Supreme Court ruling criminalizing floor crossing as presented by the Attorney General’s Office.
In his tweet the former President had called this a ‘black day for democracy’ in the nation. In spite of the developments, he called on not to worry and that the will of people will always prevail.
A black day for democracy in Malidives. No worries. People will always win. Dictatorships will always fail.

Supreme Court’s Thursday ruling had ordered to instate an anti-defection law and until the law comes into effect, the ex-parte ruling will be in effect. As such, any MP who defects from this date, will stand to lose their party seats. Any removals or defections can only be facilitated when and if the letters of dismissal are sent to the party office and accepted by Elections Commission.
