Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) biggest accomplishment is having set restrictions to the power and conduct of the President’s Office.
Nasheed said this at an event to commemorate MDP’s 12th anniversary, held on Tuesday night – where he said this was what he was most proud of.
The MDP had acquired power after Nasheed won the presidential elections in 2008, and had passed a new constitution that put in place more definitive forms of separating powers of the state.
“While this party celebrates another year in service to the people, what we must be most proud of is having ushered in a spirit of liberation in the hearts of Maldivians and setting in policies to ensure that no sitting president has limitless power” he said.
Nasheed further said that he believes all parliamentarians are political experts – due to the nature of their employment – and added that they all know how the future of the local political spheres will be shaped in the future.
