The police have asked that the hearings and evidence presented in the case over police negligence in addressing the death threats Yameen Rasheed had filed with them when he was alive not be made public.
After the writer’s brutal murder on April 23rd, his family had pursued negligence charges against the police for having failed to investigate multiple death threats filed with them.
In the first hearing for the case, legal representatives of the police’s legal team had said that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) does not wish to engage in legal proceedings unless the evidence and hearings are made secret.
At around 02:56 am, Yameen Rasheed, who was vocal about several political and social issues, was found in the stairwell of his home with over 20 stab wounds to his chest, neck, and head.
