MP Latheef left the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives on Tuesday

Dhiddhoo constituency MP, Abdul Latheef Mohamed, has on Tuesday left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The parliamentarian has confirmed this to RaajjeMV, adding that he disagrees with current government tactics, having described them as unjust.

MP Latheef especially expressed discontent with how parliamentary sittings had been conducted while the PPM maintained a clear majority. He further said many of the decisions made in this regard have not been for the ‘greater good’, serving which had been his intention when he was elected.

“I do not believe I can blindly support the party’s tactics, nor can I vote in line with their three-line whips in parliament. Therefore, I made this decision for the benefit of the people of my constituency” he said.

Latheef also said that the results of the local council elections have been indicative of how support for the ruling party has diminished.

The parliamentarian had been party to the no-confidence motion against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh, which was filed with 45 signatures.
