A total of 11 lawmakers from the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) signed the motion to remove speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
The 11 PPM parliamentarians who signed the motion are; MP for Isdhoo constituency Ahmed Rasheed, Dhihdhoo constituency MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, South-Mahchangoalhi constituency MP Abdulla Sinan, MP for Dhangethi constituency Ilham Ahmed, MP for Ihavandhoo constituency Mohamed Abdulla, Thinadhoo constituency MP Saudhulla Hilmy, North-Fuvahmulah constituency MP Ali Shah, South-Thinadhoo constituency MP Abdulla Ahmed, MP for Mahibadhoo constituency Ahmed Thorig, MP for Thimarafushi constituency Mohamed Musthafa and Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Hussain Shahudhee.
The motion, led by the opposition coalition, was submitted on Monday afternoon, with a total of 45 signatures.
This is the third time that the no-cofidence motion against Maseeh has been submitted to parliament this year; the first one- submitted with 26 signatures- failed as the opposition failed to garner the required number of votes, while the second one- submitted with 31 signatures in April- was cancelled after an amendment noting that no-confidence motions can be submitted with a minimum of 42 signatures.
42 votes are required to remove the speaker.
