Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) PG Leader and Vilimale Constituency MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik says there was nothing the Party's PG could do regarding medical leave for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
Speaking to Raajje.mv regarding the letter sent by Adeeb's family, Nihan said they had received such a letter, but the Party cannot facilitate the letter's request.
Nihan said Adeeb’s case is currently under the administration of relevant authorities. Therefore, PG cannot intervene into any ongoing trial, investigation or detention. He added the PG had no jurisdiction with regards to the request made in the letter.
As such, any decision on releasing an inmate for medical purposes can only be carried out by Home Ministry and Corrections Department.
In a letter to Nihan, Adeeb’s mother Shaheema Mohamed said that the former vice president has been diagnosed with a number of illnesses, including an internal cyst, kidney stones, and vision impairment from glaucoma since his incarceration in 2015.
The letter said doctors had stressed on immediate medical attention, as evident in the medical documents issued by doctors.
The former Vice President is serving a 33-year jail term on terror and graft charges.
