FENAKA and citizens of Alifushi island have begun to install the new generator flown into the island.
The island had been without electricity since Tuesday.
The new generator was brought in from Hulhumale’ around 2pm. The engine was brought to the powerhouse around 7pm.
Citizens of the island laid a network of pipes and plywood on top of it to transfer the generator from the port to the power house.
Authorities report the work on the generator can begin around 9pm on Friday. However, no confirmation has been given on when power will be restored to the island. The replacement generator is also a 600-kilowatt generator and placed in the same location as the previous generator. Therefore, authorities say this will greatly expedite supplying the island with electricity.
The island had been without power since Tuesday, after the radiator of the old generator broke down. FENAKA Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said a new radiator can be flown in from abroad earliest by July. FENAKA staff had attempted to inculcate a 200-kilowatt generator brought in from another island to the existing 400-kilowatt generator, but that attempt had been unsuccessful.
