Muggings in Malé increased significantly this Ramadan

The number of muggings in capital city Malé during the past month of Ramadan has increased significantly compared to the same period last year, police records show.

The Maldives Police Service’s (MPS) records publicized on Wednesday show that there were 50 reported cases of street muggings in capital city Malé between 27th May and 26th June. There are those 29 cases during Ramadan last year.

While there were 50 cases filed with the police, their statement accompanying the records say that such cases reported on social networking platforms likely exceed this amount by a large margin.

Records of other cases filed with the police during this period show that there 69 cases of assault and battery, while there were 63 for this period last year.

While the aforementioned crimes had reportedly increased, there was a decline in filed drug cases and traffic violations.

The police received 271 drug cases last year, while it received 220 in the past month of Ramadan. Police received 180 previously while it received 177 this year.
