Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has sent out congratulations to the members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on the occasion of the Party’s 12th anniversary.

A statement released by the former President noted that the reform agenda issued under his administration saw the introduction of multi-party democracy in the Maldives.

MDP is the first registered political party in the Maldives, registered on June 26, 2005.

In his statement, Maumoon noted the work carried out by the Party and general members and wished best of luck for these efforts.

The statement released by Maumoon’s successor, and former President Mohamed Nasheed said MDP was working with other political parties to strengthen the democratic systems of the nation and to ensure the integrity of independent institutions. He further said the politicization of the judiciary and Police must cease, adding that decentralized system of governance must be reinstated and to ensure the independence of Maldives as well as security and safety of the nation and region.
