The island of Huraa in Kaafu atoll has sent the proceedings collected as Zakath to neighboring Hinmafushi, as none had listed to receive Zakath.

Zakath is a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth and all the proceeds collected are distributed among the needy and destitute.

Huraa Council Vice President Fayaz Ibrahim said this year alone, MVR 26,001 was collected from 1,276 individuals.

‘This year we received MVR 26,001. This has been given to Hinmafushi to be distributed to those registered as needy in that island,’ Fayaz said.

Last year’s proceeds were handed to Hinmafushi as well.

‘This is something Huraa citizens are proud of, that there are none listed as needy. This is a good sign for the future and development of the island,’ Fayaz said.

Raajje.mv understands that over 30 had registered as needy in Hinmafushi.

Huraa Council had recently passed to eliminate 50 percent from the electricity bill of the households as a Ramadan gift.
