Opposition Parliamentarians on Thursday filed the negligence case of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb with the Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee.

The case was filed in connection to the claims made by the family and lawyer of the former Vice President, who claimed that Adeeb was being mistreated and denied treatment and that the relevant Government agencies were neglecting him.

The case was submitted by Jumhooree Party’s Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader Abdullah Riyaz to the Chair of the Committee and ruling Progressive Party of Maldives Deputy Leader Riyaz Rasheedh. The case says that the family and lawyer of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb had expressed concern over his deteriorating health and denials to provide him with required medical attention, in spite of the legal obligation on the Government to do so. The request had called on the Committee to review the case and bring in the relevant state bodies to do so.

Adeeb, currently serving a 33-year term on terror and graft charges, has faced multiple medical conditions since his incarceration in 2015. Both his family and lawyer had appealed to send him abroad for medical treatment, a request repeatedly denied by the Government.

Earlier on Tuesday, Attorney General Mohamed Anil said that the government did not plan on sending the former VP abroad for medical treatment, as he poses 'a serious flight risk'.
