Uligamu island council has on Sunday begun distributing the money donated by MP for Hoarafushi constituency Mohamed Ismail, following the damage caused due to heavy showers.
The council's deputy, Ahmed Ziyad said that MP Ismail had donated MVR 1,000 to each household; the island has a total of 68 households, hence the MP has donated MVR 68,000.
The money was handed over to the council on June 16.
On May 31, continuous rain had flooded parts of Uligamu, with the council chair, Imad Ibrahim informing that "three parts of the island had flooded; the residential area to the north, near the island's council and the area surrounding the powerhouse".
He had said that the water had risen up to three feet in some of the mentioned areas, and that strong wind had even brought down trees in some houses while the flooding had destroyed several pieces of furniture and other household items.
MP Ismail has been sharing the handover via twitter.
