Adam Azim released, says opposition's reform work cannot be stopped
Adam Azim was arrested on Thursday on charges of attempting to overthrow the government, and issued a six-day remand

Amnesty International had on Tuesday called for Azim's immediate release

Adam Azim was released from police custody on Wednesday evening.

He was released at around 3:35 pm on Wednesday, without being presented to court.

Speaking after his release, Azim said that the opposition’s reform work cannot be stopped, no matter the punishments.

“They are making a huge mistake by thinking so,” added Azim.

The former managing director of the State Trading Organization (STO) was arrested last Thursday, over allegations of conspiring to overthrow the government, with a six-day remand issued on him later that day.

According to his lawyer Ali Zahir, Azim was questioned over comments he had made live on SanguTV’s ‘Khabarah Fahu’ programme on June 7, adding that he is accused of conspiring to overthrow the government, and spreading false information regarding the country’s judicial system.

Younger brother of jailed former Defence Minister Colonel (Rtd.) Mohamed Nazim, Azim is a huge critic of President Abdulla Yameen, and is the Minister of Trade at the Maldives United Opposition (MUO)’s shadow cabinet.

He was arrested after he returned to the Maldives after taking part in various meetings with foreign diplomats, along with other members of the MUO.

On Tuesday night, Amnesty International called on Maldivian authorities to release Azim immediately and unconditionally.
