Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the Maldivian President is compromised and that the Maldivian citizens stands with the State of Qatar.

He made the statement in a meeting with the Qatari Ambassador to the Maldives Rashid Shafea Al-Marri.

In the meeting, the former President said the Government’s decision to sever ties with Qatar shows that the President is ‘compromised’ but that the citizens of Maldives stood with Qatar.

The Government’s decision to sever ties with Qatar had been heavily criticized by the public. However, the Foreign Ministry of the Maldives said only diplomatic ties were cut with Qatar. The Ministry also said that no restrictions on trade, trade or personal interactions had been placed.

The move was preceded by six Arab nations cutting ties with Qatar, citing support of terror groups. Maldives is only non-Arab nation to sever ties with Qatar.
