Marriott Bonvoy Portfolio of resorts in the Maldives are preparing to launch an array of sustainability and environmental awareness initiatives across a scatter of islands to mark the occasion of World Earth Day.

An annual event held to show the support for environment protection, World Earth Day fell on April 22 last year, and the Marriott Bonvoy Portfolio of resorts are gearing up to activate several initiatives in several islands.

The resorts include JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa, W Maldives, Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa as well as The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort.

Prithvi Yoga by JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa

This earth day, JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa is calling on their guests to start their wellness journey to relink with the earth, through a dedicated yoga session where they can disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature, titled “Prithvi Yoga”.

The title is inspired by the Sanskrit term “Prithvi”, meaning earth and the session will help the resort’s guests to learn the techniques of the ancient practice of yoga to interlace their minds, bodies and souls all the while focusing on the most precious natural resource made available to humans; the earth.

The session will be led by wellness Instructor Vishnu whose mantra is “be active physically and relax mentally”.

Prithvi Yoga is suitable for beginners and more advanced practitioners alike

This is the perfect setting for us to help our guests reconnect with nature. With the natural surroundings of sand, sun, breeze and sea, we are embracing the natural elements of earth, air and water, and weaving it into the heart of the session.”
Vishnu, wellness Instructor at JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa.

Planting greens, cleaning blues with W Maldives

Preparations of team W Maldives include planting greens and cleaning their blues. As such, the team is ready to dive in for a Reef Cleaning initiative geared up with snorkeling masks, fins, gloves and mesh bags.

The team, resiliently committed to environment protection and sustainable tourism, is also ready to plant some more greenery around the island.

The luxury island nestled into North Ari atoll is driving its talents, guests as well as community towards a path of purposeful travel and sustainable living, from island Clean-Ups, Reef Cleaning, Dive Against Debris, ocean awareness, tree planting, to a sustainable pair of shorts, made from 12 plastic bottles byMāzú Resortwear.

Adopt a Coral with Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa

This Earth Day, the team at five-star resort, Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa will contribute a large coral frame in partnership with Reefscapers.

Featuring their own coral propagation initiative, a part of ‘Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy’ which is a program that offers meaningful travel which paves the opportunity for guests to create a positive impact as they explore and build deeper connections in local communities, the resort has so far recorded over 100 species of fish around the frames.

The resort will be laying out a large coral frame for guests and associates to plant up to 106 coral fragments this year.

The frames repopulate the reef with corals and attract marine life to the island through the ‘Adopt a Coral’ program at the resort, which gives coral fragments a chance to thrive and grow into a beautiful ecosystem. The said coral fragments would not survive if left out in the open ocean.

Brother Island cleanup by The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort

Situated in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll, the team at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort will be showing their commitment to change and a sustainable future by organizing an island clean up on ‘Brother Island’ - a small uninhabited island located near the resort.

MMPRC cites Filipa Lopes, Marine Biologist, AQUA at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort highlighting that they will be supporting Earth Day by hoping to successfully remove as much non-biological debris as they are able to in a bid to maintain Brother island’s "pristine" state.

Unfortunately, we all know of the plastic crisis which is plaguing our oceans, with trash washing up on our beaches at an alarming rate. To show our support for Earth Day, we hope to successfully remove as much non-biological debris as we can and maintain Brother island’s pristine state”
Filipa Lopes, Marine Biologist, AQUA, The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort.

As a significant change can be brought by the smallest of actions, Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of resorts in the Maldives aims to lead by example this World Earth Day.
