MDP condemns Govt decision to bar Faris from meeting his aunt
Move deeply embarrassing for the Govt.
Shows the Govt. lacks empathy
Political rivalry has become personal, cruel

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the Government’s decision to bar MP Faris Maumoon from traveling abroad to meet his aunt, Fareesha Ibrahim.

The Party condemned the Government’s decision in a condolence statement issued following Fareesha’d death.

In the statement, the Party expressed their grief over Fareesha Ibrahim’s death. Fareesha was the sister of former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim, MP Faris’ mother. The Party expressed their condolences and prayed for her soul and strength for the family and friends.

The statement condemned the Government’s decision to ban MP Faris from traveling abroad to meet his aunt, who had been in the hospital for a while now. MDP said the decision by the Government was a deeply embarrassing one. MDP added that MP Faris had appealed to be released on many occasions, all which had been denied by the Government. As such, the Party said this showed that the Government lacked empathy and moved by purely political motives.

MDP added that this showed that the Government’s political rivalry has become personal and cruel, adding that this was uncivilized.

The Government had rejected the several pleas issued by MP Faris to release him to see his aunt. However, the Government had rejected this stating that MP Faris posed a flight risk. MP Faris later on said that he was prepared to travel with Police custody and that he was prepared to finance that as well. However, the Government had denied this as well.
