Islamic Ministry begins accepting Zakat payments

Islamic Ministry has begun accepting payments for Zakath.

The Ministry said Zakath payments will be accepted from Islamic Center Hall on all working days from 10.30 am to 1.00pm. Payments will be accepted from Islamic Center, Housing Development Cooperation, Vilimale’, Addu City Council and from Island Councils.

Additionally, payments can be made from Ooredoo, Dhiraagu, Allied and Bank of Maldives.

Zakath is taken from a measure of 2.4 kg per person. Based on this measure, MVR 16 will be taken from every person for generic rice, MVR 55 from every person for Thailand rice and MVR 80 from every person for basmati rice.

Islamic Ministry added that the last day for accepting Zakath payments is the 29th day of Ramadan by 2pm.

Last year, the Ministry collected over MVR 2 million from Male’ alone. The proceeds are distributed among those listed as destitute individuals in the Ministry’s register.
