Maldives Police Service (MPS) says that there was no information that can be publicized regarding the disappearance of Minivan News journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdullah and the murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed.
Police last revealed information on Rilwan’s disappearance over a year ago.
When questioned by Raajje.mv over this, Police media official said that there was no information that can be revealed, apart from the official statements released by the agency.
Police had come under severe public criticism for failure to disclose information. Rilwan’s family had also filed suit in Court against the Police due to the very same reason.
Rilwan was abducted on August 8, 2014. Initially, Police had denied that there was any connection between the abduction, the knife and red car that were in the same area as his residence. However, almost a year after his abduction, Police had confirmed that the two items were connected to his disappearance. Additionally, Police had also said that a hair sample found in the car, matched to the DNA of Rilwan’s mother. Several individuals were arrested in 2014 in connection to the case. But they were all released, due to lack of evidence.
One of the most vocal individuals calling to find Rilwan and his best friend, Yameen Rasheed was murdered in April. Police is investigating the murder and so far, six have been arrested. CCTV footage of the area shows that two assailants had entered his home. Yameen was found in the stairwell of the residence, brutally stabbed.
