The eve of Ramadan for residents in Thimarafushi island of Thaa atoll was marred with a power cut that lasted hours.
Those residing in Thimarafushi, the most populous island in the atoll, had not had access to power from 17:00 on Friday.
The Fenaka Corporation, the state utilities company, stated that the power cut had been caused by a damage to the island’s generator, adding that power would be restored once the damage has been repaired.
A source from the island’s powerhouse said that the staff charged with overseeing the generator had recently been suspended over his political allegiances during the local council elections.
Maldivians observe their first fast for the month of Ramadan on Saturday, requiring tremendous amounts of household preparations – which have been hindered by the power cut, another resident said.
