With a second death reported this week, Maldives Covid-19 death tally has reached 218.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that an 82-year-old Maldivian man was declared dead when brought to the Hulhumale' Medical Facility (MF) on Wednesday morning, confirming him as the 218th Covid-19 fatality.

While this is the second death from Covid-19 reported this week, seven fatalities have been confirmed thus far in July.

Since the pandemic began, the maximum number of deaths was reported in the month of May this year, with 88 deaths.  50 deaths were recorded last month.

Following the skyrocketing Covid-19 case number in early May, precautionary measures were imposed almost immediately. Consequently, the high case numbers slowed, with recoveries increasing, leading to an ease of restrictions.

Maldives currently has 2571 active cases, with 12 individuals hospitalized. A total of 76,332 cases were reported since the pandemic began in March of 2020, with 73,531 recoveries recorded.

259,761 people in the country are now fully vaccinated with two doses, while a total of 320,887 people have received a first shot.
