AG cannot go to Supreme Court, against Parliament: Rozaina
AG cannot request to hand over powers of Parliament to Supreme Court
Parliament reserves right to make, change laws
AG is the representative of state

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader Rozaina Adam has leveled strong criticism against Attorney General Mohamed Anil, stating that the AG cannot go to Supreme Court, against the Parliament.

Attorney General has filed case in Supreme Court, requesting to decree that no confidence motions against Cabinet Ministers cannot be filed, unless there was a justifiable reason for the motion.

Referring to the case, Rozaina, who also serves as Parliamentarian for Meedhoo Constituency, said that the AG is the representative of the state and due to this cannot file a case against another power of the state.

She stressed that he cannot request for Supreme Court to assume all the powers granted to the Parliament under the Constitution. As such, Rozaina said the Parliament had the right to make and change laws as required. Any attempts to do so is a serious breach of powers, Rozaina said.

“Attorney General cannot take another branch of the state to Court, collaborating with the Government. Supreme Court had previously made the decision. I wonder why they are reviewing this case,” Rozaina said.

Elaborating on the case, Rozaina said that the Parliament had an important role regarding the Cabinet. As such, she said the Parliament had the right to review the Cabinet Ministers and hold them accountable.
