"A quick solution must be reached"

MP for Naifaru constituency, Ahmed Shiyam has asserted that it cannot be concluded that the issue of expatriate workers is the result of negligence from a particular government.

A group of expatriate workers in the Maldives took to the streets of Hulhumalé on Monday, where they confronted officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) attempting to disperse the crowd and flung stones at government vehicles.

A video showing scenes of the confrontation soon went viral, and the MP shared the video via Twitter, describing the issue of expatriate workers going savage, as an issue of national-level that may not be determined to be caused by the negligence of a particular government.

Describing the issue to be inconceivably dreadful, MP Shiyam stressed that one can imagine how they will confront the general public when they are facing the security services with rocks and metal rods.

In light of this, the parliamentarian stressed that a quick solution must be reached.

Police media revealed that the enraged group of expatriate workers from Island Expert Private Limited, took to the streets voicing frustration in regards to the issue of unpaid wages. Amid the confrontation, police officers attained injuries and police vehicles were also left dented.

The protest comes at a time the expatriate workers in the Maldives have been more vocal regarding the issue of long-drawn-out delays in settling their due payments.

Earlier, a group of over 200 expatriate workers took 13 Maldivian workers as hostages at Bodufinolhu island, securing the island and even attacking property as well as officers who attempted to enter the island.
