A hearing in the charges raised against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, has been scheduled for Sunday.

The hearing was rescheduled to begin at 10:30am, Sunday after the initial hearing was cancelled on Thursday.

On Thursday, an official at the court revealed that the hearing was cancelled following a request from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO). PGO requested to postpone the hearing after a staff at the office tested positive for the global Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in a disinfection programme at the building.

Hearings in the cases against Adeeb are to be held through audio and video conferencing.

Seven counts of charges raised against the ex-VP by the state were heard during the preliminary hearing held on November 7, 2019.

The charges were raised after collaborative investigations conducted into the massive case of graft involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) during 2014 and 2015, by the Maldives Police Service (MPS), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery.

Raised during September 2019, the charges against Adeeb are two cases of involvement in corruption, two cases of using his position to gain undue benefits, two charges of money-laundering and abusing power.

On September 25 the same year, Adeeb signed a plea deal with the PGO under Article 104 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
