The Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) has revealed that they are yet to reach a decision on making the use of face masks, compulsory.

Speaking to press on Thursday night, the center’s spokesperson, Dr. Nazla Rafeeq revealed that a lot of thought is required when making such decisions on making things compulsory for the citizens.

As such, a decision to enforce the use of face masks raises the question on whether authorities will be able to seek out those who do not follow the order and take action on every single individual caught without a mask.

Highlighting that authorities have enforced the use of face masks, making it compulsory in a number of locations and before entering a number of places.

As such, individuals are to wear face masks in closed spaces, at all times, said the doctor.

It might not be easy to bring so many sudden changes. It might be difficult to wear face masks for a long period of time. These changes to lifestyles must be brought gradually. Making things compulsory will not resolve issues. It might not even be easy to seek everyone who goes against the rules and enforce wearing masks at all times”

In this regard, Dr. Nazla noted that they are working for the better good of the people and to ensure the safety and security of all.

Dr. Nazla noted that although wearing masks at all times has not been enforced yet, it does not mean it will not be enforced in the future.

HEOC’s discussions will be based around the situation in the Maldives as well as experiences in other countries, said the doctor.
