Southernmost Addu City has begun experiencing severe swell surges.

Ali Nizar, vying for Mayor of the city as well as former MP for south-Hithadhoo constituency, revealed that the city has been experiencing intense swell surges since Friday morning.

This has caused deep flooding and is also causing damage to residences and property.

Nizar revealed that swell surges are occurring from different regions, stressing that the residents in the various districts of the city are in need of assistance to lessen the impacts caused on their property by flooding.

According to posts and videos circulating on social media, intense swell surges are being observed near the Link Road region of Maradhoo district. The road has been flooded, in turn causing hindrances in travelling in the region.

This comes at a time the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned that some islands in the Maldives may experience intense tidal waves and swell surges, triggered by severe weather conditions in the south ocean of neighboring India.

The department warned that regions in the central and south of Maldives are expected to experience swell surges over the next three days.

As such, MET has since issued a white alert over the regions between Kaafu atoll and Addu City, where swell surges are expected.
