The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned of severe weather activities over some regions of the Maldives, triggered by severe weather conditions in the South Indian ocean.

The department released a statement, warning of intense tidal waves and sea swells affecting some islands in the Maldives, induced by the weather condition in the ocean of South India.

As such, islands in the south and central regions of the island region are expected to experience tidal waves, especially during high tide times.

In this regard, MET has cautioned residents living in the coastal areas of islands to remain alert for tidal waves.

Since Sunday, the weather conditions are spawning tidal waves across some islands already.

This has led to issues such as ankle-deep flooding in some regions, where island residents have reported that some of their vessels docked at the island harbors have also been damaged.

On Friday, the MET department issued a white alert from Kaafu Atoll to southernmost Addu City after predicting the regions to be affected by swell wave surges.

The alert is effective from 2:30pm to 8:30pm.

The southernmost city has been experiencing deep flooding due to swell surges.
