Covid-19: Maldives sees 12 more cases, recoveries surpass 600

The country's total case count has reached 1,841

Maldives has confirmed a total of 1,841 Covid-19 cases.

While new cases are being announced at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC)’s nightly Covid-19 press conference, spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook on Tuesday announced that 12 new cases have been confirmed. He added that over 800 samples had been tested.

The new cases include 11 locals and one Indian national.

Seven out of the 11 locals are connected to previously confirmed cases as well as the Indian national, while the remaining four locals have been reported as independent cases.

Further, five of the locals are at a higher risk of severe illness due to other underlying health conditions.

In addition, Mabrook revealed that 120 additional patients have recovered from the virus.

With this, a total of 608 patients have recovered. 13 of the recoveries are the cases reported prior to the detection of a community transmission, foreigners from resorts.

While authorities have said that the country’s recovery rate is slower than anticipated, as per the Health Ministry’s Covid-19 Dashboard the recovery rate has reached 33.03 percent.

There are currently 1,224 active cases in the country.

Two Covid-19 related deaths were announced in the past 48 hours; a 54-year-old Bangladeshi patient at Tree Top Hospital passed away on Monday while an 89-year-old woman at an isolation facility passed away early Tuesday morning.

With a total of seven Covid-19 related deaths thus far, the country’s mortality rate is at 0.38 percent.
