Over 300 Bangladeshi nationals have been repatriated from Maldives.

A total of 393 Bangladeshis were sent home over the weekend via two flights of Maldives’ national airline, including 203 undocumented workers.

The first flight left on Friday with 198 undocumented workers while the second flight carrying 195 passengers, 190 resort workers and five undocumented migrants, departed on Saturday.

200 Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated last week as well, in addition to the 1,000 undocumented workers sent home by May 23.

Addressing the public on May 4, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the programme to send about 1,500 undocumented workers from Bangladesh. The foreign ministry said that they are working to send as many as possible.

In his latest address on May 20, the president stressed that the Covid-19 pandemic also gives the opportunity to improve "many unfavourable practices" in the country such as improving the living conditions of expatriate workers.
