Covid-19: a timeline since discovery of first case in Maldives

While Maldives confirmed its first Covid-19 case on Saturday, it has since reached eight

A nationwide state of public health emergency was declared on Thursday, hours after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new novel coronavirus a pandemic.

Covid-19, emerged in Wuhan, China late last year, and has since spread to at least 114 countries.

Here's a timeline since the discovery of the first case in Maldives:

March 7, Saturday

  • First Covid-19 cases announced; two foreigners from Kuredu Island Resort test positive.
  • Resort health risk status increased to “Orange” with the rest of the country at “Yellow” status, and resort kept on temporary lockdown until a period determined by authorities. Patients moved to isolation center in Farukolhufushi island.

March 8, Sunday

  • Government announced two more cases; two foreigners from Sandies Bathala Maldives. Resort health risk status increased to “Orange” with same restrictive measures as Kuredu.
  • Samples collected from seven people in Summer Island Resort test negative; restrictive measures on resort lifted.
  • Italy named third nation where Maldives imposes ban on travelers; passengers and crew with travel history to the national not to be allowed to enter or transit in Maldives

March 9, Monday

  • Covid-19 cases increases to six; with two more foreigners testing positive from Kuredu Island Resort where the first two cases were discovered.
  • While the first case discovered in the country is linked to an Italian tourist who tested positive after holidaying in Kuredu Island Resort, government reveals that this man had spent time in the congested capital city, despite Covid-19 like symptoms.
  • Spokesperson, Mohamed Mabrook Aziz said that the matter will be fully investigated and that the government will take the necessary measures.
  • Following contact tracing, 13 people from Maagiri Hotel where the Italian stayed were placed in self-isolation while another individual, an employee at the Universal ticketing office, was taken to the isolation facility for testing.
  • Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem orders police to conduct a criminal investigation “into allegations of criminal misconduct surrounding initial spreading of Covid-19 in Maldives”.
  • Maldivian employee from Kuredu Island Resort taken for testing, after traveling to an inhabited island; Foakaidhoo island in Shaviyani atoll.

March 10, Tuesday

  • Eight foreigners who were identified as close contacts of a Covid-19 patient transferred to quarantine facility in Vilivaru, as a precautionary measure.
  • Five individuals from Kuredu Island Resort moved to isolation facility following symptoms.
  • A Maldivian national working in North Vilamendhoo Island Resort transferred to the Isolation facility for further monitoring and testing after developing symptoms.
  • Three individuals test negative for coronavirus, including individuals from Foakaidhoo island and the Universal Ticketing Office in the capital.
  • Two locals who were quarantined after traveling back from China, released today after observing a period of 14 days.
  • A foreigner from Kuramathi island Resort taken for testing and further monitoring after exhibiting symptoms, temporary restrictive measures initiated on island.
  • Close contacts of a confirmed case, from Sandies Bathala Maldives, tested.
  • One&Only Reethi Rah placed under temporary lockdown, after a foreign child shows symptoms and is moved to isolation facility for monitoring and testing.
  • A local who came into contact with a suspected Covid-19 case in Kuramathi Island Resort, transferred to a quarantine facility for monitoring and testing as a precautionary measure.
  • Passengers and crew with travel history to Bangladesh to not be allowed entry to the country, until March 24.

March 11, Wednesday

  • Maldives confirms seventh and eight cases of Covid-19: two foreigners from Kuramathi Island Resort test positive. Resort remains on lockdown as authorities continue to monitor situation and conduct contact tracing.
  • Temporary restrictive measures lifted from three resorts where cases were confirmed- Kuredu Island Resort, Sandies Bathala Maldives and Kuramathi Island Resort; with cordoned areas for individuals considered high-risk. While these individuals are to be isolated for the period mandated by authorities, and low-risk individuals are to be separated from this group.
  • Two Maldivian nationals who arrived from Rome, Italy, placed under 14-day quarantine as per protocol.
  • Samples collected from Maldivian employee at Vilamendhoo Island Resort comes back negative, restrictive measures on resort lifted
  • Samples of foreign child from One&Only Reethi Rah negative as well, measures on resort including travel restrictions lifted
  • Maldivian national who arrived from China placed under 14-day quarantine, as per protocol.
  • Maldivian nationals who arrived from Bangladesh placed under 14-days quarantine, as per protocol.
  • A local who stayed in the same building as an individual positive for coronavirus in Malaysia, quarantined after return; this individual is to have exhibited Covid-19 like symptoms
  • A foreign national who came into contact with a confirmed case in Sandies Bathala Maldives, transferred to isolation facility for monitoring and testing.
  • An individual from Sun Aqua Iru Veli to be tested for Covid-19 after showing symptoms, monitoring mechanisms placed on resort until results come back.
  • Maldivian released to home isolation after testing negative.

March 12, Thursday

  • Government declares a state of public health emergency
  • President speaks to the nation for the first time since the confirmation of a case; calls for public unity, assures that the services to the people will remain the same despite the expected affects to the country’s economy and that there will be no pay cuts to any civil service employees
  • Local Council Elections delayed, from April 4-8 April
  • India offers assistance for country's efforts against the virus
  • Government says that "China and Maldives are working together" while the Chinese ambassador saying that they are working closely with Maldivian authorities to identify areas of co-operation.
  • Government announces that 37 individuals have been denied entry into the country so far
  • Opposition calls to support government’s efforts against Covid-19
  • HPA orders to halt tourist excursions
  • Authorities suspend prison visitations
  • Samples of 10 additional people taken to testing from Kuredu Island Resort, where four cases have been confirmed including the first two
  • Three released to self-isolation after testing negative twice, a Maldivian and two foreigners
